What To Look For In A Dentist

Posted on November 6th, 2015 by Dr. Peter Tomaselli

The wrong time to look for dentists is when you desperately need one; in order to find the ideal dentist you must take your time. There are a number of things that you should look for and take into consideration when you are looking for a dentist.
    • Location

: Start with dentists that are close to your home or where you work. By having your dentist close by it will be much easier and far more convenient for you to schedule your visits and to ensure you arrive at the office in time for your appointment. It is also important to make sure the dentist office is open during those hours and those days when you can schedule your appointment.
    • Cost

: The cost of dental procedures varies by practice. Although it may not be possible to get a complete list of costs, try to at least get an idea of what the dentist charges for basic procedures such as fillings and check-ups. If you have dental insurance make sure the dentist accepts your plan. If you don’t have insurance, ask if the dentist will take multiple payments and/or credit cards, or if payment plans is an option.
    • Comfort

: This is perhaps the most important consideration; do you feel that you will be comfortable with the dentist as well as the staff? You need to be able to comfortably talk to the dentists, explaining the symptoms and asking pertinent questions. Your dentist must pay attention to your needs. In addition, if you suffer from dental anxiety, it is important that the dentist potentially offers sedation dentistry.
    • Qualifications

: The staff should be in a position to provide you with the dentist’s qualifications. Check with a local dental society or specialty dentist organizations. In addition, you ought to have access to his or her past education, along with the dental hygienist’s qualifications.
    • Emergencies

: Although the majority of dental care takes place during a scheduled appointment, there are times when you will need emergency care. This can be any time after normal office hours or on the weekends. You should be able to get in touch with your dentist or a substitute that your dentist works with at any time.
There are many people that you can ask for a recommendation, such as members of your immediate family, people you work or socialize with, and neighbors. They can tell you their personal impression of their dentists and answer some of your questions.
